The National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (Undergraduate) or NEET (UG) is an all-India entrance exam for students who want to pursue undergraduate medical (MBBS), dental (BDS), and AYUSH (BAMS, BUMS, BHMS, etc.) courses in government and private institutions in India, as well as for those planning to study medicine abroad.
The exam is administered by the National Testing Agency (NTA), which shares the results with the Directorate General of Health Services under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and State Counselling Authorities for seat allocation.
NEET-UG was implemented as a replacement for the AIPMT and various other pre-medical exams conducted by states and medical colleges. Serving as a unified entrance test, NEET-UG enables students to seek admission to MBBS and BDS colleges throughout India. Notably, it holds the distinction of being one of India's largest exams in terms of the sheer number of registered applicants.
With the enactment of the NMC Act 2019 in September 2019, NEET-UG became the sole entrance test for admissions to medical colleges in India, including the All India Institutes of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) and Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education & Research (JIPMER), which previously conducted separate exams.
To be eligible for the NEET UG exam, candidates must fulfill the following criteria:
Minimum age: Candidates should have attained the age of 17 years as of January 31st of the year of admission.
Maximum age limit: There is no upper age limit specified for the exam.
Citizenship: Indian citizens, Overseas Citizens of India (OCI), and foreign nationals are eligible to appear for the exam.
It is worth noting that NEET has also become mandatory for aspirants who wish to study medicine abroad but intend to return to India to practice.
