MBBS Abroad? Know All About the FMGE Exam

The Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE) is a national-level exam conducted by the National Board of Examinations (NBE), and it is conducted twice a year (June and December). FMGE is a licensure exam conducted for candidates who are citizens of India/overseas citizens of India who graduated MBBS from a foreign college and who want to get a permanent registration to practice medicine in India. Eligibility Criteria for FMGE
The eligibility criteria for applying to FMGE are:
- Candidates must be a citizen of India/overseas Citizen of India.
- Candidates must have a primary medical qualification that is recognized for practicing medicine in the country where it was awarded. This recognition must be verified by the Indian Embassy.
- Candidates must provide proof of passing the primary medical qualification by the cut-off date.
Exam Pattern of FMGE
Mode: Computer-Based
Medium: English
Question Type: MCQs
Total Questions: 300
Sections: Two parts – Paper 1 (AM) & Paper 2 (PM)
Duration: 5 hours (2 hours 30 minutes per section)
Marking Scheme: 1 mark for each correct answer. No negative marking.
FMGE Application Procedure
The procedure to apply for FMGE is:
1. Visit natboard.edu.in (the official website of the NBEMS).
2. Register and create an account. If you have already registered, you can log in to the website with your user ID and password.
3. Next, click on the “Go to Application” link to proceed with the application process.
4. Fill out the details in the application form and upload the necessary documents.
5. Then, you have to upload your scanned photograph and signature.
6. Pay an application fee of Rs. 6195/- (As of May 2025, the application fee is ₹6,195, which includes an examination fee of ₹5,250 and 18% GST amounting to ₹945.)
7. And as the last step, submit your application.

- Primary Medical Qualification Degree certificate
- Provisional Pass Certificate duly attested by the embassy of India in the country from where the qualification has been obtained
- Proof of Citizenship
